The Green Bay Packers got a surprise on Thursday’s Padded Practice

The Green Bay Packers got even more good news as they hit the field for Thursday’s practice. LB Whitney Mercilus, who suffered a rather gruesome torn biceps against the Seahawks in Week 10, was back on the practice field Thursday.

While both Mercilus and LB Za’Darius Smith, who continued to practice after opening his 21-day window yesterday, need to be cleared medically and added back to the Active Roster, the thought of having an Edge Room of LBs Rashan Gary, Preston Smith, Mercilus, and Za’Darius Smith is tantalizing and close to reality after it seemed a foregone conclusion the Green Bay Packers would have to make it through the playoffs with only Gary and Preston Smith in tow.

As valiantly and commendable as reserve LBs Tipa Galeai and Jonathan Garvin’s efforts have been since Mericlus went down in Week 10, getting just one of Mercilus or Smith back would have been a great improvement. Getting both back? LOOK OUT NFL!!

It remains to be seen how the Green Bay Packers would handle the roster crunch, particularly at Edge, when both Mercilus and Smith are ready to be activated. The team already has WR Randall Cobb nearing the end of his 21-day window and C/G Lucas Patrick on the Reserve/COVID list. The roster currently stands at 52 players, so the team would need to make 3 additional moves to open the necessary spots for these players.

CB Jaire Alexander also continued to practice today, making this his 3rd consecutive practice after returning from his bout with COVID. It remains to be seen how the Green Bay Packers will deploy their All-Pro when he returns to the field, but Ryan Wood got a clip of what appears to be Jaire in the Slot. Yes, it’s a walkthrough rep, but that could be a clue on the team’s solution to its Nickel problems

LT David Bakhtiari returned after sitting out Wednesday’s practice as part of the team’s load management routine set in place for Bakhtiari. With RT Billy Turner back, Bakhtiari practicing, and C Josh Myers looking healthy, the Green Bay Packers may get creative with its starting 5 OL, especially with Patrick hitting the Reserve/COVID list yesterday.

QB Aaron Rodgers also continued to practice, showing the toe is indeed getting healthier. Rodgers did note he’s hopeful the toe will be 100% by next week’s practice slate.

DL Kingsley Keke finally returned to practice participation after an odd past 2-1/2 weeks to say the least. Here’s hoping he’s fully past both his bout with COVID and whatever off-field issues that led Coach LaFleur to leave him inactive on Christmas against the Browns.

WR Marquez Valdes-Scantling missed his second straight practice while CB Chandon Sullivan, who was also injured in Sunday’s game in Detroit, sat out Thursday’s practice after participating on Wednesday.
