Highlights from Green Bay Packers Head Coach Matt LaFleur’s Monday Presser

The Green Bay Packers are back to work inside 1265 Lombardi Way and Head Coach Matt LaFleur held his Monday Presser.

Leading off today, Coach LaFleur pulled back a bit on the reins in regards to LB Za’Darius Smith’s return, reminding reporters that Smith hasn’t practiced since prior to the Week 1 game in Jacksonville. That said, the team anticipates Smith practicing this week to open his 21-day practice window off IR.

Coach LaFleur then touched on the defensive breakdowns by the Green Bay Packers in Sunday’s game, filing most as cases where players tried to do too much instead of just playing their assignments. Hopefully, this was a case of players trying to stat pad as opposed to a potential foreshadowing of things to come.

Coach LaFleur noted LT David Bakhtiari looked great and was moving well in yesterday’s game. The big key between now and the Divisional Round is getting both Bakhtiari’s and C Josh Myers’ level of conditioning up so both can play a complete game.

Coach LaFleur noted CB Jaire Alexander will continue to get work in practice and that the team is going through the multitude of manners in which they can deploy him once he’s back on the field. It remains to be seen whether Alexander will log snaps as the Slot CB, but LaFleur’s comments seemed to indicate the coaching staff is leaning towards that.

The Green Bay Packers may lose their Offensive Coordinator as Nathaniel Hackett has been tied now to the Denver Broncos as a potential Head Coach Candidate. LaFleur commended Hackett’s standing in the eyes of other teams and hopes he gets even more opportunities to interview for head coaching positions.

Coach LaFleur did state the hope is RT Billy Turner will practice at some point this week, though he wouldn’t commit to Turner being out there on Wednesday. Don’t be too alarmed – Turner is still on the COVID list so LaFleur’s comments may be more on the COVID front than Turner’s knee. Coach LaFleur also commended Lucas Patrick’s play on Sunday, while commenting on the tough decisions ahead for the coaching staff.

Another tidbit from the presser was LaFleur noting the team’s plan of attack for the Bye week. The team will do some self-scouting along with a bit of extra prep work on uncommon opponents (likely the ones they haven’t played this season) and also some extra conditioning and rehab work. LaFleur also noted the Green Bay Packers will practice outdoors week in the lead-up to their Divisional Round game to prep the team for that weekend’s elements.
