While the Green Bay Packers are in OTAs, the NFL released the 2022 Season Landmark Roster Dates
The NFL has released the updated roster cutdown dates for the upcoming 2022 season. The dates are similar to the ones from last preseason.
Roster cuts during the preseason will stay the same as last year. Will be gradual instead of 90 to 53 in one shot.
*Aug. 17 after 1st preseason game: Rosters go from 90 to 85.
*Aug. 23 after 2nd game: Rosters go from 85 to 80.
*Aug. 30 after 3rd game: Rosters go from 80 to 53.

Per NFL Roster rules, the Green Bay Packers will slowly reduce their roster from the current 90-man number to the 53-man active roster on August 30th. After that, the team will sign 16 Practice Squad players and are almost guaranteed to have some number of players on IR or PUP (ie likely Tonyan, Hill, Jenkins).
The NFL also announced that it tweaked the IR Designated to Return rules and Practice Squad gameday elevation rules. These tweaks include:
- increasing the minimum number of games players placed on IR must remain on the IR list from 3 to 4 games
- increasing practice squad size from 14 to 16 players (all of whom count towards a team’s in-season 90-man roster)
- increasing practice squad elevation max from 2 to 3 games per player
The Green Bay Packers were able to make heavy use of the IR-DR function last year, with no less than 5 players returning from IR stints to come back and help the team. You’d prefer they didn’t have to, but it’s great for both the players and the fans that the league has agreed to keep this rule in place. Also, more practice squad spots means more opportunities for players trying to find a place in the league.
