Green Bay Packers have been dealing with injuries all year and haven’t been afraid to look into the free-agent market to get some help. Today, the Packers have done it again with a much-needed addition to the defensive line.

According to Aaron Wilson, a Houston Texans beat reporter, the Packers are expected to add defensive end Whitney Mercilus.

Mercilus has been a longtime Texan, but the organization decided to part ways after 11 seasons. The 2012 first-round pick out of Illinois appeared in 134 games (third-most in Texans history) and recorded 57 sacks (second-most in franchise history).

The Packers’ defensive line hasn’t seen many injuries outside of Za’Darius Smith, but Rashan Gary, Preston Smith, and Jonathan Garvin have played well for Green Bay. Now the Packers will get much-needed depth and a veteran presence to their defensive line.

Through six games, Mericlus has 12 tackles, four tackles for loss, three quarterback hits, and three sacks. The Packers’ defensive end would be tied with Kenny Clark with the most sacks and second in tackles for loss.

This is the Packers’ third veteran signing during the season. The two others were Jaylon Smith and Rasul Douglas
