Welcome back to Thirsty Thursday! This week, the Packers welcome the Panthers to Lambeau Field for a Saturday night match-up, and we’ve got the perfect Carolina-inspired cocktail.
This week we’re featuring the official cocktail of Raleigh, NC, the Cherry Bounce. I had never heard of it before, so I went ahead and did some research. Turns out, this cocktail dates back to the 1600s! While it was not invented in North Carolina, it became synonymous with Raleigh back in the late 1700s when they were debating on where to put the capital of North Carolina. Some think the Cherry Bounce, which was served at two taverns in Raleigh, helped persuade the state’s leaders to buy land to make up the capital to be closely located to the bars that served the Cherry Bounce.
Interestingly enough, George Washington was reportedly a fan of the Cherry Bounce, which makes this the second cocktail in 2 weeks that our first President was a fan of! The original recipe requires soaking cherries in brandy for THREE MONTHS, and that ain’t happening. So I’m using a modified recipe I came across when doing research.
This cocktail seemed fitting, not just because of the ties to the history of North Carolina, but because it’s kind of forgettable. It’s vodka, cranberry, and soda. Eh. I’ve known I was making this cocktail for weeks and still couldn’t remember what the name/recipe was. The 2020 Panthers are one of the most forgettable teams in the NFL right now. I honestly forgot the Packers were even playing them this week. Every time I hear them I think in my head “oh that’s right they’re a team this year”. I was excited to see what they could do with the Teddy Bridgewater-Christian McCaffrey combo but you don’t hear much about the team outside of “McCaffrey’s missing another game”.
But I digress….let’s get to cocktail making!
The Cherry Bounce
- Strainer (if your shaker doesn’t have one)
- 1.5 ounces of cherry vodka

- 0.5 ounces of lime juice
- Soda, to taste
- Add all the ingredients except lime juice to the shaker with ice.
- Shake until cold.
- Strain into glass.
- Top with soda.
- Garnish with cherry.
